Regime

This page contains details of the regime at HMP Garth.


HMP Garth provides a wide range of training, learning, restorative justice and employment opportunities. In line with the National Reducing Reoffending Action Plan, courses on offer include a range of nationally recognised and QCA approved accredited pathways in Motor Mechanics, Light Engineering, Industrial Cleaning and Joinery. The remainder of the provision incorporates classes of Art, ICT, Skills for Life including ESOL, Social and Life Skills, Personal and Social development as well as some workshop support, outreach and distance learning provision.


The workshop and outreach provision supports key / basic skills and the NVQ Performing Manufacturing Operations. In addition, there are also NVQ's in the kitchen and progression routes from the PE department in respect of Sport and Leisure qualifications.

Learn direct provide skills for life & ECDL provision as an alternative method of delivery, as do Training partnerships who offer vocational retail qualifications and NVQs for progression routes.

The industries and workshop activities include contracted Mechanical Plastic Moulding, Contract Electrical Partnership, PICTA, Computer Build, Construction, Needle Trades and assembly work, Farms and Gardens, Waste Management, Braille and community workshops.


In addition to key and basic skills the NVQ in Performing Manufacturing Operations is accredited as well as IT qualifications. In addition, the NVQ Polymer accreditation is available in the Plastic Moulding workshop.

A successful peer tutor scheme is also in operation to further support and enhance offender engagement in employment opportunities.
