Education
Business Studies, Information and Communication Technology Programmes, Skills for Life Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL (full-time, part-time and evening classes), Life Skills programmes such as “Preparation for Work” and Budgeting and Money Management. Full time Vocational training in Hairdressing to NVQ level. Art and Design courses, Catering and Hospitality NVQ within the kitchen and a new qualification in Leisure and Tourism. In the industrial workshops, Work Based Learning programmes such as the NVQ in ‘Performing Manufacturing Operations' and Key Skills in Communication Skills and Application of Number.
As well as Health & Safety and First Aid certificates, an active farms and gardens department offering a wide range of vocational qualifications. Language Line and local translators are used to assist foreign nationals and education classes are sometimes presented in Spanish. Hibiscus visit weekly to assist with foreign national issues. Regime being developed to reflect needs of foreign national prisoners.
Various types of non-accredited offending behaviour groups are available e.g. drugs awareness, assertiveness & decision making, alcohol awareness, anger and stress management and a drug importers course. Face to Face (victim empathy), Users and Boozers Groups.
Healthcare
Morton Hall has type 2 health care centre status, NHS trained nurses (HCC open 08:00-17:30, nurse on duty until 19:00 and HCA/EMT until 22:00). Provision of all types of primary care and the services of a RMN. There is part time doctor cover. The prison makes use of the relevant department at Lincoln and Newark Hospitals and necessary consultants at hospitals in the area. Unit Mental Health Liaison Officers. Initiatives with Gym and Catering to promote healthy living.
Drug Strategy
Prisoners with drug problem are identified by random mandatory drug testing, and a dynamic security process (including liaison with police and staff vigilance). Arrangements can be made for rehabilitation treatment, relapse prevention, education and counselling e.g. drug awareness education, CARATs assessments and support counselling by healthcare centre staff and referral to outside agencies. Voluntary drug testing programme offered to all prisoners. Prisoners are also offered acupuncture, Morton Hall is represented on the local Drug Action Team. There are regular visits from AA and NA.
Food
Civilian caterers are employed by the Prison Service. All chefs are trained/or training to be assessors, NVQ level 1 & 2 in Food Prep & Cooking and Royal Society for the Promotion of Health Foundation Food Hygiene course. There is a pre-select menu which is constantly evolving according to prisoner preferences, seasonal availability of produce, and which caters for a range of cultural diets.
Charter Mark
The Prison has been awarded its third Charter Mark for its Standard of Excellence. It is also an Investor in People.
