Instructional Officers

The role

Instructional officers provide prisoners with a high level of vocational training over a wide range of subjects. These include training in engineering, plastics, printing, tailoring, footwear, woodwork etc.

This type of training increases the likelihood of prisoners finding employment on release and therefore contributes towards reducing re-offending.

Instructinal Officer - Glyn

What's the work like?

Glyne Chittenden. Instructional Officer HM Prison Canterbury

“Coming from a building background this job's regular employment, regular holidays, excellent working conditions compared to being on sites in all weathers and an excellent pension, which is worth thinking about. Teaching the prisoners vocational skills, I have good and bad days. Successes are when prisoners find jobs on the outside. Failures are when you try really hard with someone, but they're just not interested.”
