The Application Process

Once you decide to apply for a Prison Officer position, you will need to check current vacancies to continue with your application, or you will be able to register your interest if no vacancies exist at your preferred establishment.

Equal Opportunities

The Prison Service is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from candidates regardless of ethnic origin, religious belief, gender, age (subject to being within the normal minimum retirement age for the position), sexual orientation, disability or any other irrelevant factor.

Stage 1: Minimum Eligibility Questions

At the time of application you will be asked a series of minimum eligibility questions. If you meet the Minimum Eligibility Requirements, your application will be acknowledged.

Stage 2: Prison Officer Selection Test (POST) – online version

Once you have met the minimum eligibility, you will be sent a link to your e-mail address for the on-line numeracy test. You must complete this test on your own and within 7 days. This stage of the POST comprises of a number of work sample exercises. You do not require any prior knowledge of prison work in order to undertake this test. If successful at this stage you will be invited to attend the Recruitment Assessment Day.

Stage 3: Recruitment Assessment Day (RAD)
We want you to be as informed and relaxed about your Recruitment Assessment Day (RAD) as possible. You may wear whatever you feel comfortable in, provided it is clean, not ripped or torn and nothing is printed on it that could be seen as offensive in any way.

You should bring suitable clothing with you to undertake the fitness test, i.e. trainers and gym kit.

The RAD has been designed to test several elements that are needed in the Prison Officer role.  For more information, please view the RAD page.
