Some establishments will have a genuine occupational qualification (GOQ) in place. A GOQ is used to establish an appropriate staff gender mix in establishments based on operational need, in accordance with the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. To comply with the GOQ we may need to allocate staff to a prison according to gender.
