Although the Service tries to locate prisoners close to their home and family, sometimes it may be necessary to transfer a prisoner from one prison to another. This could be for a number of reasons. For example, if a prisoner's category rating has changed or if they are to attend an offending behaviour course run at a specific prison.
When courts convict prisoners they are normally sent, in the first instance, to a prison nearby. Existing prisoners can be moved to make spaces available for prisoners who have been sent directly from court.
The prison authorities have to tell a prisoner as soon as possible why they are being transferred, but this may be after they have arrived at the new prison. If there is an important security reason why they cannot tell a prisoner everything about their transfer, the prison authorities are entitled to keep some information back.
