When prisoners first arrive at prison, they will normally be allocated a personal officer, who is there for the prisoner to turn to for help and advice. All Youth Offender Institutions have personal officer schemes.
A personal officer is a prisoner's first port of call if they have questions, complaints or need advice. They also play an important part in making and changing their sentence plan, to help them make the best use of their time in prison and prepare them for a law-abiding life on release.
Prisoners who do not have personal officers allocated to them, can get the same support from the officer in charge of their wing or unit.
When it comes to resettlement, some prisons allocate prisoners to groups of staff or have shared working arrangements between prison officers and prison probation staff. The division of work between personal officers and prison probation staff varies in different prisons.
