Intermittent Custody

January saw a new custodial alternative added to the sentencing arsenal of magistrates and judges. The new sentence will see offenders serve their custody part-time, hence remain in touch with family, jobs and their community. 


Intermittent custody, introduced in the 2003 Criminal Justice Act, attempts to reduce the negative outcomes that can accompany even short periods of full-time custody, such as loss of employment, loss of accommodation, and family disintegration.
