Habitat and Species Action Plans

Criteria for selecting priority species and habitats for action plans 


Criteria for selecting species:


  • Species on the national Short and Middle Lists that have been identified on the prison estate, regardless of whether the species are common locally or under threat.
  • Species in the local establishment area that are considered by local and national specialists to be threatened, declining or have county significance in that area, or appear on the Long List. Species not specified here but are of local interest shall be classified under “Local action”.


  • Criteria for selecting habitats:


  • All UK key habitats found on the prison estate as listed in the UK BAP.


  • Below is a list of our Species and Habitat Action Plans. If you would like to request a copy of any of these plans, please email phil.thomas5@hmps.gsi.gov.uk

    badgersBadger, Hedgehog, Red Squirrel, Water Vole, Brown Hare, Otter, Dormouse, Water Shrew, Barn Owl, Bullfinch, Grey Partridge, Lapwing, Reed Bunting, Skylark, Song Thrush, Tree Sparrow, Linnet, Snipe, Little Owl, Kingfisher, Swift, Adder, Common Frog, Grass Snake, Great Crested Newt, Palmate Newt, Slow-worm, Smooth Newt, Common Toad.

     

    Habitats


    woodlandHedgerow, field margins, lowland hay meadows, lowland calcareous grassland, lowland dry acid grasslands, lowland heathland, upland heathland, reedbeds and fens, eutrophic standing water and mesotrophic lakes, saltmarsh, woodlands.
